Readable before decorative

A strong codex theme keeps prompts, diffs and navigation readable first — decoration second.

Native & shareable

Themes export as a portable codex-theme-v1 string. Paste it, share it with your team.

Instant & zero-risk

No engine, no install, no CDP. Native Codex settings apply your codex theme immediately, and stock recovery is one click.

Guide

How to customize your Codex theme

Theme vs skin — which do you want?

A codex theme changes colors and fonts — surface, accent, text, diff highlighting. It's native, instant, and free. A full codex skin goes further: a character banner, styled sidebar and persona text across the whole window. If you just want a calm, readable palette, a theme is all you need. If you want the immersive look people share online, build a skin instead.

Install a codex-theme-v1 string

Open Codex, press Cmd+,, go to Appearance, click Import, and paste the codex-theme-v1:… string from the studio above. Changes apply live.

Fix: "codex theme not showing after import"

Almost always a bad codeThemeId. The importer silently rejects ids that aren't built in. Our generator locks that field to a valid built-in (like one or catppuccin) while keeping all your custom colors — so your codex theme imports every time.

Codex theme FAQ

Is the Codex theme generator free?
Yes. Generating and exporting a pure-color codex theme string is completely free, forever. You only pay if you want a full immersive skin with a character banner.
Does a Codex theme need an install?
No. A codex theme uses Codex's native Appearance settings — you just paste the string. No engine, no download, no CDP. It's the safest way to customize Codex.
Can I share my Codex theme?
Yes — the codex-theme-v1 string is portable. Send it to a teammate and they paste it into their own Codex settings.
What's the difference between a codex theme and a codex skin?
A theme is colors and fonts (native, free). A skin is a full-window character banner + styled layout (installed via a safe local engine). See the skin generator →

Or go all the way — a full Codex skin.

Themes are lovely and free. But if you want your favorite character running your whole IDE, that's a codex skin.
